The Aswan High Dam, built in the 1960s, is a massive rock-fill dam across the Nile River. It provides crucial flood control, increased agricultural production through irrigation, and generates a significant portion of Egypt’s electricity. The dam also improved navigation and boosted tourism. However, its construction led to the displacement of over 100,000 people and had environmental consequences like reduced downstream soil fertility due to trapped silt and increased erosion. Lake Nasser, the large reservoir created by the dam, is one of the world’s largest artificial lakes.
